Uniting Voices Against Gender-Based Violence: A Reflection on the 16 Days Campaign
The 16 Days of Gender-Based Violence Campaign was more than just a series of sessions. It was a movement, a community, and a celebration of collective strength. Over 16 days, 16 expert speakers from Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Kenya, and beyond brought their diverse insights to over 180 participants. The result was a dynamic. Through knowledge-sharing experience that inspired action, fostered connections, and reminded us that we are not alone in this battle.
Each session tackled critical topics such as online harassment, intimate partner violence, and societal norms that perpetuate gender inequality. But this was no ordinary webinar series. The energy was palpable, the conversations were deep, and the outcomes were powerful. GBV Flyers
One participant shared: Feedbacks
"The session on breaking societal norms opened my eyes to how deeply ingrained these issues are in our communities, but it also gave me hope that change is possible."
Another reflected:
"Hearing stories from Kenya and Lebanon made me realize the global scope of gender-based violence and how our struggles and solutions are interconnected."
From academic experts to grassroots activists, the 16 speakers exemplified what it means to turn knowledge into action. As one of our distinguished speakers from Kenya emphasized
"Empowering young people to tackle gender-based violence is not just a responsibility; it’s a necessity for societal change."
A Community Built on Solidarity
This initiative wasn’t just about listening; it was about engaging. The virtual sessions came alive with thought-provoking questions, heartfelt thank-you messages, and enthusiastic comments. Participants were encouraged to share their perspectives, making each session a two-way exchange of ideas and inspiration.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team worked tirelessly to ensure the program’s success. Moderators, a mix of students and professionals, went above and beyond to prepare scripts, research topics, and collaborate with speakers. As one of our moderators, Ms. Dinithi Edirisinghe, shared:
"Moderating these sessions wasn’t just a responsibility; it was a chance to grow, to connect, and to contribute to a cause that matters deeply."
A Testament to Volunteerism
This entire initiative was powered by volunteers, showcasing the beauty of collective effort. One of the driving forces behind the program was Ms. Simarana Fairoos, a law student and intern who managed everything from planning to execution. Reflecting on her experience, she shared:
"Talking about gender-based violence and creating spaces for dialogue is critical. This initiative proved that we can make a difference when we come together with purpose and passion."
