The Story Behind the First “Voices at the Table” Dialogue

Every story that matters begins quietly.

Not with an announcement, not with a launch but with a conversation.

That’s exactly how Voices at the Table began. One afternoon, as we reflected on how disconnected young people often feel from the world of diplomacy, I said something that would shape what came next:

“Everything begins with a conversation.”

That thought stayed with me. Over the weeks that followed, it grew into an idea, one that Nelum Ratnayake so beautifully led and shaped into a reality. Together with our small but determined team at the International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP), we decided to create a space where youth and diplomats could meet as people, not positions.

A space that would be less about panels and podiums, and more about shared stories, honest questions, and real dialogue.

The Beginning: A Table That Spoke

Our very first session of Voices at the Table was graciously hosted by the High Commission of Bangladesh in Colombo. It was a quiet morning, warm sunlight, soft chatter, and a sense of anticipation that something meaningful was about to unfold.

The Bangladesh High Commissioner opened the dialogue with genuine warmth. His words were not formalities; they were reflections, about cooperation, trust, and the power of understanding. The Ambassador of Nepal joined us soon after, and his presence, despite the challenges Nepal is currently facing, was deeply humbling. His message of resilience and hope that even in difficult seasons, dialogue remains the bridge that keeps us connected resonated with everyone in the room.

What moved me most that morning was not just what was said, but how it was said. The participants; young leaders, peace advocates, researchers, and dreamers weren’t just listening. They were engaging, asking, responding. They were part of the dialogue in the truest sense.

Behind Every Moment, Many Hands

This dialogue was unlike most events we’ve done before. It wasn’t funded, it wasn’t formal, it was a collective effort of people who simply believed in the purpose.

We were supported by wonderful partners who made the day memorable in their own ways, Barista Coffee, whose warm brews fuelled lively discussions, and Ceylon Spices, whose aroma filled the space with comfort and familiarity.

I am deeply grateful to Nelum for her leadership, and to every member of our team who worked quietly behind the scenes from coordinating logistics to welcoming guests ensuring that everything flowed with grace.

A Dialogue That Felt Human

What made this dialogue special was how human it felt.

There were no scripted speeches, no rehearsed remarks. Just people, talking, listening, and learning.

The Bangladesh High Commissioner spoke about the spirit of regional cooperation, about shared values and people-to-people understanding. The Ambassador of Nepal reminded us that even in times of challenge, hope thrives through connection.

By the end of the session, the table itself had become symbolic, a table that didn’t divide, but brought together.

One participant told me later, “It didn’t feel like an event. It felt like something growing, something that will continue.” And that, I believe, was the trust measure of success.

The Dossier: Preserving the Voices

After the event, our team began to piece together what we wanted to preserve, not just transcripts or notes, but moments. That’s how the Diplomatic Dossier came to life.

It’s a creative, photographic, and narrative record of what happened, a youth-led reflection on diplomacy, culture, and dialogue. It tells the story of Voices at the Table as it unfolded, and captures the essence of why it mattered.

Each section captures a slice of the day, from the laughter over coffee to the quiet moments of reflection, from questions that lingered to answers that inspired.

Why It Matters

This was not just another program. It was a reminder that real diplomacy happens in human spaces where empathy sits beside dialogue, and where stories become the starting point for understanding.

It reminded me that peacebuilding is not an abstract goal; it is a series of conversations that begin at tables just like this one, sometimes in embassies, sometimes in classrooms, sometimes over a cup of coffee.

One of the young participants told me, “I walked in thinking I was going to listen. I walked out feeling like I had been heard.”

That, to me, is what Voices at the Table is about.

Looking Ahead

This was only the beginning.

The next chapters of Voices at the Table will bring more embassies, diplomats, and young voices together from South Asia and beyond.

Our hope is to keep this dialogue alive to make it a recurring space where youth and diplomats continue to meet, talk, and listen. Because when we listen deeply, understanding follows and with understanding, peace.
