On November 30 and December 1, 2024, Jaffna witnessed an inspiring two-day learning experience. Twenty-five motivated individuals came together to take their first steps toward becoming Media Literacy Facilitators, ready to bring positive change to their communities.
Organized by the International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP) in partnership with the American Corner Jaffna, this program aimed to empower participants with the tools to educate others about media literacy and responsible information consumption.

Day 1: Building a Strong Foundation
The program began with a warm introduction, energizing participants for the journey ahead.
Key Sessions and Highlights:
1. Introduction to Media Literacy: Participants explored the importance of media literacy, learning how to identify biases and misinformation.
2. Understanding Information Ecosystems: This session, paired with interactive activities, taught participants to map how information flows and impacts communities.
3. Fact-Checking Fundamentals: A hands-on session where participants practiced verifying information using modern tools.

Day 2: Practical Applications and Action
The second day focused on practice and preparation, giving participants the confidence to step into their roles as facilitators.

1. Creating Engaging Training Content: Participants learned how to make their sessions interactive and relatable.
2. Facilitating Media Literacy Workshops: They practiced techniques to manage group dynamics and ensure meaningful learning experiences.
3. Capstone Project: The grand finale! Each participant designed and presented a training plan to demonstrate their readiness as facilitators.

The Outcome
By the end of the program, the 25 participants were ready to step into their roles as Media Literacy Facilitators. With the knowledge and skills gained, they can now confidently deliver 2–4 hour media literacy sessions in their own communities.

Supported by IYAP, these facilitators will continue their journey, conducting workshops and inspiring others to think critically about the information they consume. Their work will ripple across communities, creating a more informed and empowered society.
