Righteousness in the Heart
Righteousness is more than just a virtue; it is the inner compass that governs our behavior even when no one is watching. The character is revealed not by how we treat those who can benefit us, but by how we treat those who cannot return the favor. Righteousness means choosing what is morally right, regardless of convenience, popularity, or reward.
Just imagine your life, and reflect on who you are, and ask yourself, What are the good qualities I carry within me? Do I have righteousness in my heart? The concept of righteousness is not merely an external act but an internal compass that directs our character, decisions, and interactions with others.
If our world is a place where every individual upholds the values of righteousness, a world where kindness is a universal language, honesty is the foundation of communications, and justice is the guiding force of society, such a world would be one where humanity flourishes and builds based on the collective goodness of its people.
Righteousness is nothing but about choosing kindness instead of cruelty, honesty instead of dishonesty, and compassion instead of indifference. It is the ethical backbone of our actions that guides our interactions and relationships with others. The effect of a single act of righteousness cannot be underestimated. Even a small act—helping a neighbor, standing up for what is right, contributing to society, or a kind word to one who needs it—can radiate outwards to affect society as a whole (What is Righteousness?, n.d.).
Righteousness and Global Peace: Dr. Kalam’s Message

A moment that deeply shaped my understanding of righteousness took place in 2012. My sister, then preparing for her Advanced Level exams, had an incredible opportunity to attend an event at Jaffna Hindu College. The guest of honor was none other Dr. A.P.J.Adbul Kalam, the former President of India and a globally respected scientist and humanitarian. During the event, a few students were selected to ask him questions—my sister was one of them. She asked, “Sir, what advice would you give to the citizens of Sri Lanka, especially its children, for humanity and peace in the country?”
Dr. Kalam's responded was powerful.,
“Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. When there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world.”
These words hold deep significance. They emphasize the undeniable connection between individual morality and global peace. Righteousness, when nurtured within individuals, extends to families, communities, nations, and ultimately, the world. His message is more relevant today than ever, reminding us that the pursuit of righteousness is not just a personal journey but a collective responsibility.
Personal Reflections on Righteousness
Each of us plays many roles in life, like student, professional, parent, mentor, and leader. As Shakespeare wrote, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Within these roles, there is always one quality that makes us unique for who we are.
As a student, I have often wondered how I manage to perform well in my exams without being the most intense or tireless studier. I came to realize that my form of righteousness lies in helping others—sharing notes, guiding classmates, and being a support system. This act of giving without expectations has shaped my character more than any academic achievement.
Righteousness can manifest in different forms for different people. For parents, it may be the sacrifices made for their children’s development and well-being. For employees and employers, it could be treating colleagues and subordinates with fairness, respect, and dignity. For educators and mentors, it may be their unwavering dedication to shaping the minds of future generations.
Living with Righteousness in Daily Life
Righteousness isn’t reserved for dramatic moments or public stages. It lives in everyday choices.
- Speaking the truth even when it’s difficult.
- Helping someone in need when no one is watching
- Choosing kindness over cruelty
- Standing up for someone who has no voice
The impact of a single righteous act can be immeasurable. One kind word, one gesture of honesty, one stand for justice—these can spark change that ripples through lives and communities.
So, I leave you with this question. What is the righteousness inside you?
Identify it, nurture it, and let it guide you towards a life purpose, integrity, and positive impact. Our world desperately needs more people who lead with their hearts.
